Simas and Prop 2 ½ override prevail at Upton annual town election
Voters re-elect Selectman Simas, agree to override to fund BVT roof work

On May 7, the Town of Upton held its annual town election. According to the results certified by Town Clerk Denise Smith, of the town’s 6,540 registered voters, 941 (or 14.4%) cast a ballot in the election. Of the ballots cast, 428 (45.5%) were in person and 513 (54.5%) were by mail.
The results are as follows:
- Town Moderator (1-year term): David C. Loeper
- Select Board (3 yrs): Brett Adam Simas
- Assessor of Taxes (3 yrs): William A. Bonina
- Cemetery Commission (3 yrs): Mildred F. Galeone
- Board of Health (3 yrs): Laura J. Hebb
- MURSD School Committee (3 yrs): Vikki L. Ludwigson
- Planning Board (5 yrs): William W. Taylor
- Public Library Trustees (3 seats, 3 yrs): Alycia R. Phylis, Laurie S. Wodin, Maureen B. Porter
- Public Library Trustee
(1 seat, 1 yr): Lauren Catherine Fobes
- Recreation Commission (3 yrs): Christopher K. Murphy
- Trust Fund Commission (3 yrs): Lyn Haggerty

In addition, there was one seat available on the Housing Authority (3-year term) with no formal candidate running. Some write-in names were submitted at the ballot box, but the Town Clerk reports “No winner declared/tied write-in counts”.
The town also agreed to raise, through a Proposition 2 ½ override, a yet-to-be-determined amount of money to cover Upton’s share of the “bond issued by the Blackstone Valley Vocational Regional School District for roof construction and the replacement to energy efficient rooftop HVAC units at the Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School”. That vote was 517 in favor and 312 opposed (with 112 blanks).
