The winner of the 2024 Mendon Scarecrow Contest was the Thibodeau Family at 25 Carpenter Hill Road for their “Sanderson Sisters” scarecrows.
Second place went to JDM Cannabis at 103 Uxbridge Road for “Snoop Dog,” and third place went to Vandervalk Farm & Winery at 25 Lovell Street for “Will Barrow.”
The event was sponsored by the Mendon Cultural Council. There were 22 entries in the contest and 284 votes were cast.
“The council was blown away by the response,” said MCC Chairperson Joanne Lamothe. “We were hoping for at least five participants, but we had 22 entries including families, residents, businesses, and the municipality.”
The contest was judged by the public. The scarecrows were on display around town between Oct. 1 and Oct. 23. The first, second, and third place winners received a trophy, and all other participants received a medallion (featuring a scarecrow face) for participation.
This was the first year Mendon held the contest.
“We wanted to do something that wasn’t done before and not tied to a major holiday,” said Lamothe. “In earlier times, Mendon was a farming community, and scarecrows were part of farming so what better way to honor Mendon’s history than a scarecrow contest.”
Lamothe said, “The people of the Town of Mendon should know that, without their support, this would never have happened. The Cultural Council wants to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We have some really talented and creative people in Mendon, and the council was glad they had an opportunity to show their talents, and we look forward to what next year’s scarecrow event will bring.”
