A Bard & A Mercenary

Concert of viol music; music of Tobias Hume and readings of Shakespeare.

This concert is an exploration of two great artists of Elizabethan England: musician Tobias Hume, and poet William Shakespeare. These two creatives are each recognized as innovators of their respective crafts, and as uniquely expressive artists. The works of Hume and Shakespeare share a spirit that suggest autobiographical inspiration. Tobias Hume, having been a professional soldier and amateur viol player, led a life distinctly unique among most musicians, some of which can be implied by the creative titles of his programmatic works. Regardless of medium, these two artists explore and express their worlds in striking styles, and share a poetic musicality in their works.

The selections on this program juxtapose these two unique voices, and will include excerpts from Julius Caesar, Hamlet, and various sonnets, paired with popular solo pieces from Hume's "The First Part of Ayres, French, Pollish, and Others".
